 Meet the Legendary Johnsons

marathon maniacs

Troy and Cathy Johnson are from Red Boiling Springs, TN. They are avid runners.  With over 400 marathons for Cathy and more than 300 for Troy, this dynamic duo landed in The Guinness Book of Records. They are the oldest married couple to complete a marathon on each continent (aggregate age) at 129 years 109 days. This record was achieved between 8 February and 19 February 2015. Over the course of their attempt, Cathie and Troy Johnson completed marathons in Australia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Tunisia, the United States, Chile and Antarctica.

They have completed 213 lifetime marathons, and both are two-time 50-staters as of 2014.  Cathie has completed 514 marathons or longer.  She has completed a marathon in all 50 states – 4times, all 7 continents and 26 countries.  Troy has completed 372 marathons. Marathons in all 50 states – 3 times, 23 countries and all 7 continents.  Cathie is the only woman in Tennessee to compete in 500 marathons.

Troy and Cathy used to run 5Ks and 10Ks separately until they both signed up for a 1996 marathon.  They ran it together – appreciating the company and the support, they have run side-by-side every since.  “If we sat at home, he’d read the newspaper I’d watch TV and neither one of us would be talking,” Cathy says.  “Running together helps you communicate.”

The Johnsons lend their support to the creation of a Heritage Museum for their home town. All proceeds from the 5K go to restoring the old Red Boiling Springs Bank building, which is on the National Historic Register. Once the restoration is complete, the building will house rotating displays about the history of the Red Boiling Springs Community and its people.

Because the 5K falls close to Veterans Day each year, we take this opportunity to honor those who have served our country.  A table of honor, displaying photos and stories of veterans, is our tradition, along with recognition of those veterans that are present.   37150 Community Center,  another community non-profit,  is planning a special event for our Veterans that morning, that will be held in conjunction with the 5K race.  There will be a flag raising, the singing of the National Anthem and serving breakfast to our Veterans.

Teams of four may compete against each other.  The teams can be coworkers, family members, friends.  Get together, pick a name and start training!
